The Netherlands are also known as the low country: three of the main rivers in Europe end here: the Rhine (Rijn), the Meuse (Maas) and the Scheldt (Schelde), thus forming a huge delta of large and smaller rivers.

The country is, in fact, devided in North and South by the Riverland, where the rivers Rhine, Waal and Maas stream close to each other toward the North Sea. Throughout history, from prehistory to Roman Empire to Second World War, this Riverland has been a strategically important region. This is the main reason why many medieval castles have been built here. Many of them have disappeared or have been altered in later ages.
